United States Dime

The Coinage Act of 1792
established the dime or
"disme"  The
decimal-based coinage
system in the United
States was recommended
in 1783.  Alexander  
Hamilton, the nation's
first Secretary of the
Treasury, asked for six of
these coins to be made
in a report to Congress in
1791. Among the six was
a silver coin, which was
tenth part of a silver unit
or dollar.
